Bodies of Missing Couple Found in Volga River After a Decade
In central Russia, the remains of a young couple missing for nearly ten years have been recovered from the Volga River. Ilya Zhirnov, 25, and his girlfriend Kira Cherkasova, 22, vanished in December 2005 after Zhirnov borrowed his father’s car to pick Cherkasova up from work in Cheboksary.
For years, their disappearance remained a mystery. Police investigated but closed the case due to a lack of evidence, leaving both families without answers.
The breakthrough came when a local diving enthusiast, exploring near a beach in the Chuvash Republic, discovered a submerged vehicle. Authorities identified the couple through car documents that survived over a decade underwater. Inside were skeletal remains confirmed to be Zhirnov and Cherkasova.
The car was retrieved the following day. Investigators believe the pair likely skidded off icy roads into the river during winter, resulting in a tragic accident.
While the discovery brings closure, it also marks the end of a long and painful wait for the families. Police continue to examine the evidence, with final conclusions expected once the inquiry is complete.
